Long Island Sound’s on-the-water watchdog is back! The legacy of Terry Backer lives on.

We are pleased to announce that Soundkeeper, Inc. is joining forces with Connecticut Fund for the Environment and its bi-state program Save the Sound to support a full-time watchdog on the waters of Long Island Sound. Relaunching this advocate position will continue the critical work of one of the Sound’s greatest defenders and amplify Save the Sound’s ongoing efforts to protect and restore Long Island Sound.

From 1987 until his death in 2015, Terry worked on the water monitoring pollution and, in Hartford, fighting to stop it. Today’s announcement is the first step towards ensuring his legacy lives on for decades to come—the major goal of the planned future merger of Soundkeeper, Inc. into CFE/Save the Sound. You can learn more about CFE/Save the Sound and its four-decade history of fighting for Long Island Sound here.

This summer, a Soundkeeper will be back on the water, serving as your eyes and ears on the Sound’s many bays and harbors, and the Sound’s voice in the halls of government.

Help find the next Soundkeeper by sharing the job description and boat request. Thank you!
