Waterford CT Long Island Sound. Warming of the Sound threathens nuke plant operations. The Millstone Nuclear Power station owed and operated by Dominion Power shut down the number 2 reactor due to excesive water tempetuures of Long Island Sound which propvides the cooling for the machinery. The cooling water cannot be higher than 75 degrees f but the water is almost a full degree hotter by the intakes and near 80,f in the middle of the Sound.
Soundkeeper has for years advocated and legally pursued the use of cooling towers to help reduce the exterior water being draw into the plants. Cooling towers are standard engineering on newly constructed opower station.
For many years Soundkeeper has keep its focus on ending once through cooling to save billion of maine organisms, we continue to struggle to see large power stations converted to Close Cycle cooling, Not an easy lift but we stay at it. A added plus which would protect marine orgaisums and help cool the plants in the climate change we are seeing after decades.
